If blow up snowmen, cartoon character yard signs, candy canes lining the driveway, and Christmas lights in every color are not your idea of a classy Christmas yard display, see the steps below for a few ideas to give the outside of your house a classic, elegant, and sophisticated Christmas display.
- Decorate your front yard in moderation. Do not try to win the prize for the most lights or decorations in your neighborhood. Understated Christmas decor is sophisticated.
- Only use small white lights in your outside Christmas display. Multi-colored lights tend to look juvenile. Medium sized or really large lights also look less sophisticated. Do not use blinking or flashing Christmas lights. Just a few strands of lights here and there are a very nice touch.
- Wreaths are a classic touch as long as they are not over done. Add a colorful bow to your wreath that ties into the overall color scheme of your Christmas yard decor. Hanging a wreath on the door is a very traditional touch, however also consider hanging a wreath on each of your windows or one large wreath at the peak of your home. You can use real fruit, pine cones, or flowers in your wreath.
- Surround your door with greenery for a classic Christmas display. Live greenery works best to create an inviting fragrance.
- Consider adding candles or candle-looking battery powered lights to all of your window sills that face your front yard, or at least the upstairs window sills. The candles will light up the exterior of the whole house with a warm glow. You can also set up your indoor Christmas tree in front of a window so it can be seen from outside.
